TextRimmer V1.0
Copyright © 1996 Al Metz
TextRimmer is a small freeware utility written with AMOS Pro which takes a text
file and trims each line so that the lines are no longer than a specified
number of characters. I wrote it because word processors don't format text
when you save it as an ASCII file. What this means is when you view it from a
text viewer (such as MuchMore) many of the words will be cut off at the right
hand side of the screen. Also if you try to edit the plain text word processor
file with Ed (the text editor which comes with Workbench) you'd notice that Ed
would try to put each paragraph on a single line and if the paragraphs were too
long then some of the text would be lost. Also many word processors add extra
blank lines when they output plain text files. TextRimmer solves such problems!
This archive should contain the following files:
TextRimmer
TextRimmer.info
ReadMe
ReadMe.info
Example
Example.info
NOTE: The "ReadMe" and "Example" files are identical except that "ReadMe" is
after using TextRimmer, "Example" is before using TextRimmer.
To install TextRimmer on a hard drive just drag it's icon where you want it.
To use TextRimmer you will need a plain ASCII text file. Most word processors
have an option to save a file as plain ASCII text. Or you can use the
"Example" file included with this archive.
Once you start TextRimmer you will be given a requestor asking you for the file
to trim. Then you will be given another requestor asking you for the
destination file. This is the name you want the modified file saved as (You
can quit the program early by clicking "Cancel" in either requestor). If the
destination file already exists you will be asked if you are sure.
If the original file has an icon, it will be copied to the destination file.
This just takes a few seconds. If the original file does not have an icon then
neither will the destination file.
You will be asked for the number of columns. You can enter any number (within
reason) but I recommend 80 for text viewers such as MuchMore and 78 for Ed.
After that you will be asked if you want to eliminate extra blank lines. If
your word processor adds unwanted blank lines between paragraphs like Final
Copy and Final Writer do when outputting a plain text file, you should enter
"Y". If you enter "Y" the program will change any multiple blank lines it
encounters into single blank lines, and eliminate any single blank lines it
finds. If the text file doesn't have any unwanted blank lines enter "N".
You will then be asked if you want to view the output. If you enter "Y" then
you will see the text the way it will be printed to the output file, assuming
you chose a length of 80 columns or less. Printing all that text to the screen
slows down the process a little so you may want to enter "N" for very large
files in order to speed things up, in which case you will be shown numbers
indicating the progress. After you answer the program will start working.
When it's done you will hear a bell and be asked if you want to do another.
That's all there is to it! I haven't tried it with any program files such as
AmigaDOS scripts so I don't know if it would effect the way they run or not.
Naturally, I am not responsible for any damage that results from the use or
misuse of this program.
This program is freeware so you don't have to send me anything if you use it,
but I wouldn't mind if you did send me something even if it was just a postcard
saying how you liked the program. My address is:

(Sorry! No Internet address....yet)
Be sure to try my version of Monopoly! I believe it's on Aminet with the
filename "AMonopolyV14.lha".
P.S. To fans of a certain British sci-fi comedy program - Yes, this program
was named after the original annoying hologram and yes, that's what the icons
were inspired from too.
